Paper masks for the photo-reconnaissance Supermarine Spitfire PR.XIX in 1:48 scale. The cut pieces fit the frames of the pressurized cockpit from both sides and are meant for the Airfix kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The PR.XIX version combined the airframe of the late Spitfire with a Griffon engine and a pressurized cabin, thanks to which the pilot could work at levels the opponent's fighters could not reach. The guns disappeared from the wings altogether, fuel took the freed space in the leading edges and cameras went into the fuselage. The extent of its range and its altitude were the only protection the machine had. The Royal Air Force kept this version long after the war and in 1954 it flew the last combat mission of any Spitfire with it over the Malay Peninsula. A few examples then served for years taking meteorological measurements.
Compared with an ordinary Spitfire, the pressurized cabin has differently divided and more heavily framed glazing, so masks from the usual fighter version will not fit it. The pieces included respect the shape of this cockpit, adhere to a smooth surface and peel off after spraying together with the paint.
Reconnaissance finishes tend to be smooth and glossy, which means that every imperfect transition at the boundary of a mask shows more than on matte camouflage. Thin coats and a calm pace therefore pay off. On this version the camera windows in the sides of the fuselage are glazed as well, and it is good not to forget to treat them too.
