Pre-cut masks in kabuki paper for a model of the Su-27 in 1:48 scale at the ADVANCED level. New Ware marks the extent of its sets with the words BASIC, ADVANCED and EXPERT; ADVANCED is a higher level than the entry-level BASIC, and an EXPERT level is also made for the same aircraft and scale. What exactly each level holds is stated on the box of the set. It is not a kit but an aid for painting.
With masking sets the entry level concentrates on the essentials, while the higher levels tend to be fuller and hold more separate shapes. The practical consequence is that with a higher level you spend more time sticking masks on but less on cleaning up afterward. If you are building the model with the covers open or reckoning on more complex camouflage, it is usually worth reaching for the fuller set; for a quick build with a closed cockpit the basic extent is enough.
With fuller sets it pays to take the masks off the backing one at a time rather than all at once — otherwise it is easy to lose track of which shape belongs where, and small pieces are easily mislaid. Seat each shape dry, check its position and only then press it down. Before spraying, let the model rest a while and go over the edges of the masks with a finger or a toothpick; the paper tightens slightly after being applied and the edges occasionally lift.
