About product

Steel seat belts for the Spitfire F Mk.XVIII in 1:48 scale

This set from the Czech maker Eduard deals with a single yet unmissable detail of the cockpit, the seat belts. The parts are etched from steel and printed in color, so they do not have to be painted and you can use them practically straight off the fret. In scope it is the smallest possible intervention in a model: it does not add the whole cockpit fit-out, it deals with one specific thing, and it does it properly.

Where they belong on the model

The belts go solely into the cockpit, onto the pilot's seat and its immediate surroundings. This is exactly the part of the model that is best seen once it is finished, because the Spitfire has a teardrop canopy with a large glazed area and the cockpit is visible even with the canopy closed. Steel sheet holds a bend considerably better than softer brass, so the belts can be draped convincingly over the edge of the seat, left trailing on the cockpit floor, or fastened across an empty seat if you are building the aircraft without a pilot figure.

The real subject

The Spitfire F Mk.XVIII was the postwar outcome of the Griffon-engined line of development. Compared with the older versions it received a strengthened wing and landing gear and a larger fuel load, and it served mostly in overseas theaters with the Royal Air Force. The cockpit layout matched that of the late Spitfires, so the interior looks complete and it would be a shame to leave the seat bare.

Usage tips

Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard mat and dress the burrs with a fine file. Shape them gradually with tweezers in small steps; steel takes even a repeated correction of the bend. They are glued with super glue applied with a pin in a truly minimal amount; ordinary cement for plastic does not hold on metal. The color printing is durable, yet seal it at the end with a light coat of matte varnish so that the belts sit in among the other matte surfaces of the cockpit.

Who the set is for

  • builders of the Spitfire in 1:48 scale who want to raise the level of the cockpit quickly
  • newcomers to photo-etched parts, as belts are the easiest way into this technique
  • modelers with the canopy opened or slid back
  • anyone who does not want to struggle with painting miniature buckles with a brush

This is an accessory for a model, not the model itself. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a cockpit detail accessory that is added to a Spitfire kit in 1:48 scale bought separately.

No, the parts are printed in color from the factory. We only recommend a light matte coat at the end so that the surface matches the rest of the cockpit.

Super glue applied in a minimal amount, ideally with a pin. Cement for plastic does not hold on metal.

Yes. Belts are among the easiest photo-etched sets of all, because they are only shaped and glued on and nothing has to be joined into assemblies.
