A photo-etched set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard intended for the landing flaps of the model of the British fighter Supermarine Spitfire in the FR Mk.XIV version in 1:48 scale. Sets of this kind replace the plastic flaps with thin metal parts so that the flaps can be shown lowered together with their internal structure. It is not a kit but an aftermarket accessory for the base model.
The Spitfire had flaps that returned of their own accord on the ground once the system was switched off, so photographs show them in both positions; lowered flaps, however, bring a model to life and open up an interesting internal space. Injected plastic can only produce the flap as a single thick part with a suggested surface. Photo-etch allows a thin section, the gaps between the ribs and a readable internal structure, which is exactly what is visible in the lowered position. The letters FR in the version designation mark the reconnaissance form of the fighter, with cameras in the fuselage.
First check on the model how the plastic flap comes away; often it has to be cut out and the opening cleaned up. Bend the photo-etched parts in a bending tool in short sections so that the bend is straight along its whole length. Glue with super glue, and on larger joints with epoxy, which gives you time to position the part. Remember that with lowered flaps it is good to add small wiring or rods from thin wire. Degrease and lay down a primer before painting. The inner surfaces of the flaps are often painted in a different color from the upper surface of the wing, so paint them before you glue the flaps to the model.
