The model faithfully captures the elegant elliptical wing silhouette and the typical line of this legendary aircraft; the barrels of the two 20mm cannons of the Vb version protrude from the wing. The kit is typically accurate — the parts sit together nicely and the model practically falls into place. A choice of wing shape is usually included, because some Mk.Vb machines flew with clipped wingtips for better agility at low altitude.
The Spitfire is regarded as one of the most beautiful single-seat fighters of the Second World War. It was designed by the British engineer Reginald J. Mitchell and the prototype first flew in 1936. The Mk.V version became the most numerously built variant of the whole family; the Vb was armed with two 20mm cannons and four machine guns and carried a more powerful Merlin engine. Spitfires became famous as early as the Battle of Britain and served on practically every front until the end of the war.
Paint and fit the cockpit before you close the fuselage, mask the canopy glazing and paint it together with the airframe; the cockpit can be displayed open. Decide in advance whether you are building standard or clipped wings, because it affects the silhouette as well as the scheme. Build the period British camouflage in soft transitions and bring out the panel lines with a fine wash. Apply the decals on a smooth gloss coat and finish with a matte overcoat matching the period.
