A photo-etched set in 1:48 scale for the two-seat Spitfire Tr.9 trainer.
Responsibility details are not available.
The two-seat Spitfire came about by converting the single-seat Mk IX for training. The pilot cockpit moved forward and a second, higher-set cockpit for the instructor was built in behind it, so that he could see ahead over the student's head. The Tr.9 designation therefore covers a machine that kept the elliptical wing and all the familiar Spitfire shapes but has an unusually long glazed upper fuselage. On a model that is the most conspicuous change and at the same time the place that calls for the most work.
The etched metal parts replace items on the model that would have to be several times thicker in plastic for production reasons. Thin sheet looks like thin sheet, so it pays off on handles, panels, stiffeners and everywhere that is visible on the finished model. On the two-seat conversion there are more open views inside than on an ordinary Spitfire. The parts list and their placement are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
Work over a light-colored surface with raised edges; a tiny part that springs away is otherwise lost. Before gluing, dry-fit each part in the place where it belongs, and only then apply super glue, in the amount that fits on a pinhead. Make bends along the whole length at once rather than gradually, or the part will buckle. Degrease the metal before painting and spray it with a primer; without one the coat rubs off during handling.
For builders of the Spitfire in 1:48 scale who are building the two-seat trainer version. Photo-etched sets are usually cut for a particular kit, so check the manufacturer's instructions beforehand to see which one it fits. The model, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
