Turned brass barrels of the Hispano 20 mm cannons together with their wing fairings, made for Spitfire Mk.Vb kits in 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Hispano Mk.II cannon stood so far out of the leading edge of the wing that the designers had to cover it with an elongated aerodynamic fairing. It was this pair of fairings that gave the Mk.Vb its instantly recognizable silhouette. A machine with the so-called B wing carried two twenty-millimeter weapons and four 7.7 mm machine guns, and from the spring of 1941 it became the most widespread variant of the whole family. It flew over the English Channel, over besieged Malta and over North Africa.
The injection-molded part from the box tends to be blunt and slightly tapered, and after the parting seam is sanded away it loses its round section. Turned metal solves this problem once and for all: the muzzle is drilled out, the wall is thin and the surface needs no preparation beyond degreasing.
Cut the plastic weapon off where it comes out of the fairing, open the hole out with a drill to the diameter of the pin and dry-fit the brass. Only after checking that both wing halves line up should you fix the joint with a thicker super glue. Metal holds paint considerably better after a light matting and a coat of primer made for metal surfaces.
The dimensions match 1:48 scale and the shape of the fairings matches the Vb version. The package holds only the metal parts for this modification.
A small note on painting: leave the inside of the muzzle dark, best with a matte black with a touch of brown. A mirror shine along the whole length of the weapon looks overdone, because the real thing was smoked by firing and matted by the weather. Dark metal with a faint breath of graphite on the highest edges only looks convincing.
