Small warning cones are among the most overlooked and yet the most effective props of a scene. They are made by printing in resin, which manages a thin wall as well as a rounded tip, and in 1:48 scale they measure only a few millimeters. That is exactly why it pays to take them off the frame over a pad, so that a small piece does not get lost.
On an airfield apron around a parked machine, beside a mobile set of boarding steps, in front of the gate of a base, on a construction site, at a checkpoint or at the scene of an accident. A line of cones set out creates a corridor and thereby forces a story on the scene without needing a single extra figure. A pair of cones by rails or by a raised hood suggests work in progress.
Real cones tend to be a saturated orange or red with a white reflective band. The surest procedure leads through a white base, over which the color keeps its saturation; the band is then masked off and gone over. The lower edge deserves a cast of gray and mud, because a cone stands on the ground and tends to be clean only the day after it was unpacked. A matte varnish unifies the surface and rids the part of the gloss of the print. A cone knocked over on its side then gives a scene a sense of haste and movement.
