A tower transformer station, that is, the narrow tall hut with a hipped cap, insulators under the cornice and sheet-metal doors, which everyone who has ever driven through the European countryside knows. In 1:48 it is a very useful building: it is small, it goes up quickly and it gives a scene scale and a civilian context that a grassy board with an aircraft on it lacks.
They were built from the nineteen-twenties on all over central Europe at the edges of villages, by railways, by farms and also by field airfields, which were fed with electricity from the same network as the surrounding villages. It is precisely for that reason that the building suits a diorama of a field airfield in 1944, equipment parked up behind a village and a postwar scene alike. An interesting guide to the shape is the fact that dozens of these huts have survived to this day and many of them serve on.
Put the transformer station at the edge of the board or behind a fence, not in the middle, or it will drown out the main model. You pick the plaster out by laying irregular patches of lighter and darker paint over the base tone and only then adding a run under the cornice and a greenish band from the foot of the wall. On the gable belongs a warning plate, at the foot nettles and tall grass that nobody mows. Run the wires leading to the insulators from thin fishing line; it gives the building a purpose and joins it to the rest of the scene.
