This miniature in 1:48 scale is meant for modelers looking for a human dimension to go with their hardware. The figure of an infantryman of the French army of 1914 to 1918 is handled in a resting position, that is at the moment when a column has halted and the men have taken the load off their backs. The word Set in the name suggests a multi-piece package; the exact makeup is not stated here.
The soldier of the French infantry of that time was called the poilu. From 1915 he was issued a uniform in the bleu horizon shade, that is a light blue-gray, and an Adrian helmet with a low crest. An inseparable part of the picture was a long greatcoat, a haversack and such a quantity of carried material that every pause meant relief.
The base blue-gray tone comes across most strongly when you brighten the raised places of the cloth and lay a cooler dark shade into the folds. The leather bags and straps tend to be brown to ocher, and the helmet carries a deeper variant of the color of the uniform. For the face and the hands oil paints work well, as they stay workable for a long time and take patient layering.
