A set of photo-etched parts in thin sheet metal replaces the side protective plates, which the kit solves in thick-walled plastic. The difference matters above all in 1:48 scale: the real plates were thin, and on a model it is precisely their thickness that gives a plastic part away at first glance. It is not a model of a tank, but an accessory that needs a basic plastic kit. Verify the match with your kit against the manufacturer's instructions before you buy.
Schürzen were side protective plates hung on rails along the hull of medium and heavy tanks of the Second World War. Their task was to protect the weaker side areas, and on vehicles of the Panther family they were the plates covering the running gear. In practice the plates were often lost, bent or missing altogether, which is a gift to a modeler: a photo-etched set lets you turn individual parts, bow them or leave them out entirely without the result looking unfinished.
Cut the parts off the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, not with nippers. Make the bends in a bending tool or between two blades, so that the edges are sharp and straight. Before gluing, degrease the metal with alcohol and glue with cyanoacrylate glue applied in the smallest amount, best of all with a piece of wire. Metal needs a good primer, otherwise the paint comes away during handling. Suggest the bowing and damage of the plates with a blunt tool on a soft surface before you glue them on.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
