A set of precisely die-cut painting masks for a model of the Soviet fighter Yakovlev Yak-1 in 1:48 scale. It is not a kit but an aid for painting: the templates cover the glazing and the other areas that are meant to stay free of paint, and they are removed once the spraying is finished. The shapes are cut for the kit named in the product name.
The Yakovlev Yak-1 was a Soviet single-engined fighter of the beginning of the 1940s with a liquid-cooled twelve-cylinder engine and a mixed wood and metal structure. It was built in several production series, which differed in the shape of the canopy and in the rear part of the fuselage, so a masking set is always tied to a particular rendering of the model.
The main benefit of die-cut templates is repeatable precision. Cutting tape by hand directly on the part means pressing a knife onto brittle clear plastic, and even a light score shows as a matte line once it is painted. A template is laid on without cutting, so the knife does not touch the clear part at all. Work in a clean space; fingerprints on the glazing will show under the paint. Transfer the smaller pieces with the tip of a scalpel with a slightly dulled edge or with tweezers with flat jaws. If the set contains templates for the wheels as well, mask the rim only once the tire is painted; matte rubber sprays less well over glossy metal. Once the masks are off, check the edges against the light and correct any paint that has run with a fine brush.
The set of masks is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
