The Deutsche Volkspolizei was the police force of the German Democratic Republic and came about shortly after the Second World War in the Soviet occupation zone. Unlike western police forces it had a markedly military character from the start, including barracked units and uniforms close to military ones. The end of the 1950s, at which the set aims, was moreover the period before the building of the Berlin Wall, when the border between the two German states was only being tightened and the police played a daily role on it.
The figure in 1:48 scale captures a member of the Volkspolizei in the form of 1958. It finds a use in a scene with a period vehicle, at an airfield or by a building, where the figure gives the scene its time and place. The 1:48 scale is usual for aircraft models and for some vehicles, so it suits modelers too who build mainly equipment and are only looking for a human figure to go with it.
Cut the surplus material off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder carefully. Before painting, wash and degrease the figure and choose the glue according to the material of the parts. In 1:48 scale the figure is small, so proceed sparingly: too thick a coat of paint will fill in precisely those folds on which the legibility of the figure rests. A basic shade, a dark wash into the folds and a fine lightening of the peaks prove themselves. The face is enough suggested with a few strokes; detailed drawing gets lost in the result and looks exaggerated.
