A bridge is among the most rewarding elements of a scene: on its own it tells where people walked or drove, and it gives a scene the momentum a bare board with grass will never have.

What it is suited to

Scale 1:35 matches the usual kits of military equipment and figures, so the bridge fits into a scene with a vehicle, with a patrol or with a civil storyline. It lends itself to bridging a stream, a washout or a ditch, or to a crossing where the scene narrows and the viewer is told where to look. What you put under the bridge plays a load-bearing role too: water, mud or stones give the scene depth.

Building and painting tips

• Plan where the bridge will go before you start shaping the terrain, or the banks will not meet its ends.
• Cut the excess material off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the remainder down.
• Wash and degrease the parts before painting, or the paint will hold badly.
• Choose the glue according to the material of the parts; liquid cement for polystyrene is only apparently universal.
• Wood comes out well after a dark wash into the joints and drybrushing in a lighter shade, and moss or grass then brings the edges to life.
