A model of the Russian Maxim vz. 1910 heavy machine gun in 1:35 scale. An accessory for a scene with figures, for the deck of a vehicle and as a detail in its own right.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Maxim vz. 1910 is the Russian version of the Maxim system heavy machine gun, introduced before the First World War and used in both world wars. The barrel is cooled by water in a wide cylindrical jacket, thanks to which the weapon can take a long burst; topping up the water, though, was as much part of serving it as bringing up ammunition. The machine gun was moved on a low wheeled carriage with a steel shield, which gave it its characteristic silhouette. It was a heavy and conspicuous weapon, but reliable and very effective in defense.
The accessory is in 1:35 scale, the scale in which figures and ground equipment are built. The machine gun comes out a few centimeters long in it and will work in a scene with a crew, on a truck bed or on the deck of a vehicle, and as a detail on its own in a diorama. The extent of the package and any mounting variants are given by the manufacturer.
If the parts are not polystyrene, they are bonded with super glue applied in the smallest amount. Cut the excess material off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder down, so as not to thin the delicate shapes of the cooling jacket and the shield. Wash and degrease the surface before painting. The weapon looks best treated sparingly: a dark base shade, a dark wash into the pressings and a light picking out of the edges that suggests worn metal. The wheels and the underside of the carriage will take dust and mud to suit the setting you are building the scene in.
For modelers who build the Eastern Front of both world wars and want a weapon in the scene that is typical of it. A model, figures, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
