Three resin castings capture the French Modele 49 field hat in three differently shaped forms. Each piece has a modeled chin strap, so it can be fitted to a figure as though it were drawn tight under the chin.
The chapeau de brousse, literally the bush hat, was introduced by the French army as a light headdress for a humid tropical climate. The wide brim protected the face and the neck from the sun and the rain, and the soft material could be rolled up and put away in a haversack. Soldiers commonly adapted the hat, and it was precisely the turned-up brim, on one side or on both, that was among the most frequent modifications. The Modele 49 pattern is associated above all with the battlefields in Indochina and with service in North Africa.
Rid the casting of grease, cut off the sprue gate and sand down the mating surface on the crown of the head. Do not bend the thin brim, as hardened resin is brittle. Painting comes out most convincingly in two layers: spray the base shade, and finish the highlighting of the edges and the shadow under the brim with a brush. Set the strap apart with a richer, less faded color than the cloth itself.
The hats are supplied unpainted and without a figure.
