This accessory from DN Models is a material sold by length, not a stencil and not a kit. You cut off the length you need and use it where a real chain is meant to hang on a model: on a towing eye, for holding tools, for securing a load on the engine deck or loosely coiled on a fender.
In kits a tow chain tends to be either a solid cast imitation with molded links or a merely suggested strip. Neither can be bent into a convincing sag, because a real chain sags under its own weight and the individual links twist. A metal chain has this quality of itself, so a finished scene looks livelier, and that even without further work.
The coarser link suits the larger scales rather, where the chain is clearly visible on a model. Before painting it is advisable to degrease the metal, as otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface. A dark base and a dry brush with a metallic shade over the edges of the links works well, and so does chemical blackening. The ends can be secured with a drop of cyanoacrylate glue; set the sag before the glue hardens.
The scale is not unambiguous for this product, because it suits several sizes at once.
