Masking film for the aggressor finish of the two-seat F-5F of the American naval squadron VFC-111 Sun Downers, 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The US Navy maintains squadrons whose only task is to play the opponent. They fly smaller and agile machines and wear the finishes of foreign air forces, so that crews in training combat get used to recognizing an unfamiliar silhouette. The VFC-111 unit with the nickname Sun Downers belongs among the best known and its F-5 series aircraft appear in a whole range of schemes from desert to pixel ones. The two-seat F-5F rendering is recognized by its lengthened forward section.
The film carries the boundaries of the color fields for the whole airframe including the transitions on the underside. Aggressor finishes often have soft and sharp transitions side by side and tend to be asymmetrical, so comparing the left and right sides does not help. The stencil removes that problem, because both sides are drawn separately exactly as they really are.
After sticking the film on, press it down with a wooden toothpick, above all in the places where it crosses riveted detail. The slightest failure to seat shows up as paint running in, which is then harder to correct than it is worth.
Removal is best done before the finish has cured completely.
Smaller parts from the edge of the sheet are easier to carry on the tip of a scalpel than with tweezers, which crumple them easily. Before you start, go through the layout of the scheme and think about which field will come first.
Once cured, the sprayed surface is ready for decals and for subsequent emphasis of wear.
