The set 1:48 Avro Lancaster B Mk.I Insignia And Numbers Paint Mask Set contains masks of roundels, code letters and numbers of the British night bomber.
Responsibility details are not available.
An insignia set focused on the roundels, the squadron code letters and the fuselage numbers. It is cut from a thin masking tape. On a sizeable four-engine airframe, applying long decals over the ripples of the skin tends to be tricky; spraying gets around that problem.
The Lancaster grew out of the unsuccessful twin-engine Manchester, and with four Merlin engines it became the most capable British bomber of the war. The spacious bomb bay without bulkheads allowed it to carry a load that others could not manage: from the ordinary three-and-a-half-ton bombs to the giant penetration explosives intended for bunkers and viaducts. The best-known action remains the night attack on the German dams with a rotating bouncing bomb. Most missions, however, took place in darkness over the Ruhr, where machines with a black lower fuselage searched for the target by the markers. The seven-man crew worked in an unheated space, where at altitude the temperature fell far below zero.
A matte black lower surface strongly absorbs light, so indicate the position of the masks lightly in pencil first. Code letters tend to have a spacing laid down by period regulations, so align them by the window frames. Apply the paint lightly in two goes. Start a roundel composed of several rings with the lightest tone; any overrun is then more easily painted over.
