Cut masking films for the special scheme of the Japanese F-4EJ Kai Phantom from its farewell year of 2020. The outlines are matched to the parts of the Super Wing Series kits in 1:48 scale.

The designation Phantom Forever 2020 belonged to the decoration given to an F-4EJ Kai of the Japan Air Self-Defense Force when the type was withdrawn from service at Hyakuri air base. It was not a few extra markings: the graphic ran across the fin, the spine and the sides of the fuselage and behaves as a continuous picture across the whole airframe.
Large-area graphics from film break over the rivet lines on a model, and once the varnish has dried a noticeable step remains around its edge. A masking stencil gets around this problem - the pigment lies directly on the surface and the boundary between the shades is level with its surroundings.
One millimeter on the model here corresponds to almost five centimeters on the real aircraft. A fuselage roundel sixty centimeters across works out at twelve millimeters, and a fin number thirty centimeters high at six. Those are dimensions in which cut film behaves entirely reliably. The warning placards by the filling points, however, a few centimeters long in reality, would fall well below half a millimeter - markings that small remain work for the printed decals from the box.
The film is lifted off section by section, the surface is degreased before it is laid on, and the paint is applied in thin covering coats so that it does not run under the edge. The stencils are cut to the outline of the parts of the modeling line named above, so on another kit they may fit only roughly. Neither paints nor plastic parts are included in the delivery.
