A set of stencils for the so-called digital camouflage of the heavy Su-27 fighter. The pattern consists of hundreds of small rectangular fields that are practically impossible to paint by hand, which is why it is cut into film. 1:48 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Su-27 came about as a counterweight to the American fourth-generation machines: a twin-engine airframe with a smooth blending of fuselage into wing, a large fuel load and a range that surpassed everything then flying in Europe. Around the turn of the millennium, trial finishes made up of small rectangular fields in three or more close tones appeared on several aircraft of this family.
A soft camouflage transition can be sprayed freehand. A pixel pattern cannot: it lives off every field having right angles and the same size. Once an edge smears or the size of the fields starts to drift, the illusion is gone. Cut film is the only way to keep the raster regular across the whole surface of the airframe.
If one field on the real aircraft is a quarter of a meter, in 1:48 scale it comes out a little over five millimeters. That is still a comfortable size. It is the number that causes trouble, not the size: the area of the wings and spine of the Su-27 is generous and there are many hundreds of fields on it. It is exactly the extent of the work that sets this set apart from an ordinary camouflage mask of the same brand in the same scale.
Working from the lightest tone to the darkest has proved itself, as has lifting the film not all at once but section by section, so that the order of the fields does not get confused. Between the layers the paint has to be allowed to cure properly. A kit and paints are obtained separately.
