Masking stencils for the checkerboard finish of the M2A2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle in its Ukrainian rendering, 1:35 scale.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Bradley was designed to carry a squad of infantry right up to the place of the fighting and at the same time to deal with the enemy's armored targets. The turret carries a twenty-five millimeter cannon and a launcher for antitank missiles; the hull is aluminum with add-on armor. The Ukrainian army took the machines over as foreign aid and in its hands gave them finishes of its own as well.
A checkerboard pattern rests on a regular grid of small fields, and it is precisely the regularity that is the hardest nut for a modeler. The eye immediately spots it when the squares are of unequal size or when the rows converge. Making such a pattern yourself means drawing the grid out on masking film, cutting out hundreds of small fields and keeping the same spacing across the whole length of the hull and across the curve of the turret. A ready-made set eliminates this part of the build and the modeler sprays straight away.
Leave the masking for the time when the hull is built but the gun, the hatches and the accessories are not yet fitted. The pattern then does not have to go around obstacles. Lay the film on a well cured base shade, otherwise the base will come away with it when removed. Direct the spray perpendicular from above and in thin coats.
