A circular printed base in A4 format from the German brand Uschi van der Rosten captures the grass-paving concrete slabs that were used to firm up the dispersal and taxi areas of German airfields. The motif is printed in high resolution on heavier card, so these are not plastic or printed panels but a flat surface the model is stood on.
Concrete blocks with regular openings were laid so that grass could grow through them. The surface could therefore carry an aircraft and drained water away, and at the same time it was far harder to tell apart from the surrounding terrain from the air than solid concrete. The combination of gray stone and islands of green is utterly typical of German airfields of the period and gives the model a setting that a photograph gives away at once.
It is worth going over the sheet with a matte varnish from a spray can: the surface is unified, protected against abrasion and stops reflecting light. Then glue the base onto a rigid board so that it does not curl. The edges of the circle can be capped with a thin strip or blackened with a marker. For more depth, scatter fine static grass along the edges.
Paints, varnish and grass material are not supplied with the sheet.
