The fourth number of the Ukrainian line of busts has a specification at the manufacturer and in foreign distribution that the name lacks: it depicts a sniper. That gives the painter a clear direction, because with this profession in particular the equipment is so distinctive that the bust carries itself even with no base and no accessories. The piece is in resin and is supplied with no paint.
A marksman working at a long distance needs above all to disappear. Hence the camouflage suit of loose fringes and sewn-on strips of cloth, which breaks up the outline of the shoulders and the head, then netting over the face and subdued colors on every object that might reflect light. The optics and their covers are among the most striking elements of all on a figure of this type.
A suit with fringes is painted from the bottom up: a dark base, then layers of ever lighter green and ocher tones applied only to the edges of the strips. Never use a single shade on the whole area, because merging kills the volume. A dry brush does more work here than a glaze, and a light dusting with pigment at the end gives the impression of long lying in the field.
