The British whispering giant with the high-lift devices of the wing in the lowered position, 1:144 scale. In its name the set is tied to the Roden kit of this turboprop aircraft.

The Bristol Britannia was among the most elegant airliners of the 1950s. Four Proteus turboprop engines gave it the thrust that piston machines could only long for, and at the same time it was remarkably quiet in the cabin – hence the nickname whispering giant. The first flight took place in 1952, but trouble with icing in the engines pushed its entry into service back to 1957. By then jets were already on the horizon and the Britannia stayed at eighty-five examples built. A number of them then carried cargo and soldiers for long years.
The Britannia had a large wing with long flaps and in the landing configuration its rear outline changed markedly. The set has this condition: the flaps as separate parts and with them the completion of the trailing edge, which is fitted in place of the strip cut away.
Anyone building an aircraft with four engines will appreciate that the work can be divided – the inner and the outer flap are dealt with separately and room for checking stays between them. It also works well to glue a flap only after both adjoining surfaces are painted, because a brush does not get into a narrow gap. And one more small thing: the machine looks more convincing when the nose gear is extended into the loaded position together with the flaps, that is a little lower than in cruising flight. In a collection the Britannia represents the short epoch when it seemed that the future belonged to turboprop giants. It lasted barely ten years, but the machines it left behind are all the more interesting, and this is one of them.
