A foam wheel bay mask for a model of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IXc fighter in 1:48 scale, intended for Eduard kits.
Responsibility details are not available.
The wheel bay in the wing tends to be a nightmare when painting. It is deep, intricate, full of pipes and bulkheads, and paint still always finds its way in while the upper surfaces are being sprayed. Taping it over means cutting tiny pieces and the mist gets under them anyway; plugging it with cotton wool means risking fibers stuck in fresh paint.
A foam molding solves both. It goes into the bay so that it fills it over its whole depth, holds by its own springiness and is pulled out with tweezers once the paint has dried. The edge stays sharp, because the foam sits right up to the rim of the opening and does not lift while spraying.
The Mk.IX version came about as a quick answer to the German Fw 190, which the older Spitfires could not match. A Merlin with a two-stage supercharger was squeezed into the airframe and a stopgap turned into the most numerous variant of the whole type. The letter c in the designation belongs to the universal wing, which allowed the armament to be changed according to the task. That wing is exactly the one whose bays the mask is shaped to fit. Anyone building a machine with the late rudder should try the shape of the bay dry before spraying, to be sure.
