Art Scale 1:48: double-sided masks for the two-seat Spitfire Tr.9. They deal with the frames outside and inside, cut for the Airfix kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The two-seat conversion of the Spitfire came about only after the war, when it turned out that there was a surplus of finished airframes and a shortage of trainers. The front cockpit moved forward, a raised instructor's seat was added behind it and the whole spine received a conspicuous bulged hood. Machines like this served, for example, with the Irish air corps and in India, and their silhouette cannot be mistaken for any other version.
The set carries masks for both the outer and the inner side of the glazing. The inner side is masked so that the frames can be sprayed in the interior color; the finished canopy then reads as real glazing in a metal frame and not as a transparent shell stuck onto the fuselage. On the two-seat version, where the glazing is long and broken up, that difference shows at first glance.
The inner masks and the spraying of the interior color come first; once dry, the part is turned over and masked from the outside together with the other surfaces of the fuselage. It is a good idea to dip the clear part in a glazing polish before gluing, because once the masks are on you can no longer get at the surface.
Lay the masks with dry tweezers. They are applied dry, without water and without a softener. They are removed with an oblique pull across the surface, not straight up, so that the paint is not torn away from the edge along with the edge of the frame.
It also pays to think about the order in which the canopy is glued. If the canopy is fitted right at the end, the interior stays accessible for accessories and belts, and the masking work is done away from the model, where small strips are far easier to handle than in a finished assembly.
