An accessory for dioramas in 1:48 scale worked up by 3D printing, as the name of the item states directly. The real subject is an acoustic locator of the US Navy, that is a device for finding aircraft by the sound of their engines.
Before radar appeared, air defense had a single early guide, and that was hearing. Acoustic locators amplified it with a set of large funnels on a rotating stand. The operator turned the assembly until the sound was equally loud in both ears, and from the position of the funnels read off the bearing to the aircraft. It was a conspicuous, cumbersome device, forgotten today, which is exactly what makes a good accessory for a diorama: a viewer stops at it and asks what it is.
The printed parts are not of polystyrene, so ordinary modeling cement has no effect on them and they are glued with cyanoacrylate glue. After printing, supports remain on the parts; cut them off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the remainder carefully, so as not to touch the shape itself. Before painting, wash and degrease the parts and use a base color, otherwise the paint holds badly. The funnels and the stand tend to be thin, so handle them carefully and support them while sanding. The particular sequence of assembly is given by the maker in the enclosed instructions.
Paints, glue and a base for the diorama are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
