A specialized set of pre-cut self-adhesive templates in kabuki paper for the MiG-21F-13 model in 1:48 scale by Eduard. It is not a kit but an accessory: masks that deal with one particular and at the same time most demanding thing on this aircraft, the spraying of the metal panels.

What it is for

The MiG-21F-13 is typically presented in a bare metal finish, but the metal here is not all one metal. Different parts of the airframe were of different materials and under different heat loads; the rear fuselage around the engine in particular has a different coloring from the forward sections. That is why the fuselage is not uniformly silver but made up of panels with different shades and sheens of metal. The mask set covers these areas for you, so that you can spray them one after another in different metallic shades, with no cutting of tape by hand and no ragged transitions.

Use

• spray the base metal shade over the whole airframe first and let it cure thoroughly
• stick the masks onto the panels that are to stay in the base shade and press the edges down carefully
• spray the exposed panels in a different shade of metal (darker steel, titanium or brass tones on the tail section)
• the process can be repeated and layered, which builds a convincing mosaic of panels
• take the mask off at a sharp angle; kabuki paper has a low tack and does not lift the finish
