The roadster that replaced the 720S

The open McLaren 750S came in 2024 as the direct successor to the 720S. Woking left it the V8 engine of 4.0 liters with two turbochargers, took a few kilograms off and retuned the chassis and the steering. The Spider version adds a retractable hardtop to that, which disappears behind the rear end within a few seconds and turns a closed coupe into a roadster. The light gray Cirrus Grey is among the shades on which it is easiest to see how the flanks of the body break around the side intakes.

The workmanship of the miniature

The miniature comes finished. The body is cast in a metal alloy and painted, the underside and the interior are plastic, and the rubber is made up of separately fitted tires on wheels of their own. The lettering, the lights and the badges are applied by tampo printing, so they keep a sharp outline even on an area smaller than a fingernail. The length of the car works out at roughly seven centimeters in this scale.

The blister as part of the collection

The packaging is not merely a wrapper. Collectors tell a piece taken out of the blister from one that has stayed untouched on the card, and the difference shows over time. Anyone who wants both buys twice. The model is meant for display, not for play on the carpet: the rubber tires and the painted surface will take careful handling, but not a fall off the table.

Where it belongs in a collection

In a display case devoted to modern supercars the open version makes a natural counterpart to the closed coupe of the same type. Stood side by side they differ in the line behind the heads of the crew and in the way the rear edge of the body is dealt with, a detail that comes out at this scale only in a pair.
