A kit in 1:700 scale combining the dry dock of the Boston shipyard Charlestown Navy Yard with the American destroyer USS Frank Knox (DD-742) in its 1944 form.
Responsibility details are not available.
Charlestown Navy Yard is an American naval shipyard in Boston that served for many decades for the building, repair and maintenance of warships. The dry dock is its key facility: a ship is brought in, the gate is closed and the water pumped out, so that it stands on blocks and is accessible below the waterline as well. That is where damage was repaired, the propellers and shafting changed and the hull cleaned. USS Frank Knox, hull number DD-742, is an American destroyer of the Second World War period; the year in the name defines the form the model relates to.
The pairing of dock and ship gives a finished scene, not just a model on a stand. The ship in the dock stands on keel blocks, around it you can see the floor of the dock, the stairways and the stepped walls, and 1:700 scale keeps all of it to a sensible size for a display case. It is a rewarding subject at the same time: the hull below the waterline is otherwise hidden, and in the dock you can finally show the whole of it.
Lay the scene out before you start gluing and try the seating of the ship in the dock dry. Paint the walls of the dock separately from the ship, otherwise you will not reach them later. The concrete of the dock looks convincing if you leave the surface slightly uneven and bring out the seams and the drainage channels with a darker wash. Wash and degrease the parts before painting. In 1:700 scale the rule is that wear and traces of service are applied sparingly.
Paints, glue, putty and accessory sets are not included, unless stated otherwise.
