About product

HMS Calcutta 1:700 (Trumpeter)

A plastic kit of the British light cruiser HMS Calcutta in 1:700 scale from the production of the Trumpeter company. 1:700 is the most widespread collector's standard for ship models: the models stay reasonably large, they can be lined up side by side in a collection and there is a wide range of accessories for them.

The real subject

HMS Calcutta was a light cruiser built at the close of the First World War. In the nineteen-thirties, like a number of her sister ships, she went through conversion to an anti-aircraft cruiser: the original artillery was replaced by guns with a high elevation, completed by light automatic weapons for defense against low-attacking aircraft. In this role she served during the Second World War, where such ships protected convoys and task forces from air threat in the Mediterranean. It was precisely the conversion that gave the ship her characteristic silhouette with open decks and a dense arrangement of anti-aircraft positions, which reads well on a model.

Building and painting tips

Proceed from the bottom up: first the hull, then the decks, the superstructure and at the end the masts and the fine fittings. Cut the tiny parts off with a sharp scalpel and clean them up with a file, not with a knife. With ships, painting is more practical by subassemblies: the hull and the decks separately, the superstructure separately, and the assembly comes only after varnishing. Spray the base shade with an airbrush, and a panel wash will bring out the division of the decks and the superstructure. Photo-etched railings, ladders and antennas are not usually part of plastic sets, but they raise the impression of a finished model markedly. The model can be finished with the whole hull on a stand, or as a waterline model set into the water; think the choice through before the build.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of British warships in 1:700 scale
  • Anyone interested in anti-aircraft cruisers and the protection of convoys
  • Modelers who like working with tiny parts and photo-etched metal
  • Builders putting together a display case with a uniform ship scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Whether the package offers both variants of the hull is to be checked against the instructions in the box and the manufacturer's data on the packaging.

Check the presence of photo-etched parts on the packaging. Railings and antennas are commonly bought separately.

The parts are tiny, but the structure of a ship is logical. A sharp scalpel, tweezers and patience when seating the masts all help.

It carried artillery with a high elevation and light automatic weapons instead of the original naval guns, so that it could protect a task force from aircraft.
