About product

Hiei 1:700: a Hasegawa plastic kit

Injection-molded plastic kit of the Japanese battleship Hiei in 1:700 scale from the Japanese manufacturer Hasegawa. The model is part of this maker's range of warships in this scale and is designed as a waterline model: the lower part of the hull is absent and the finished ship is set on a water base or into a diorama. Hiei was a sister ship of Kongo, so the model goes together beautifully with the other units of that class and with Japanese cruisers and destroyers in the same scale.

The real subject

Hiei belonged to the Kongo class and, unlike the lead ship, was built in a Japanese yard from the start. Between the wars she was disarmed and converted into a training ship under the international disarmament agreements; in that form she also served for ceremonial voyages. In the second half of the 1930s she went through a thorough reconstruction that returned her to the state of a full-fledged fast battleship: she received a new powerplant and a modern pagoda superstructure, whose layout became the pattern for later Japanese battleships. The main armament consisted of eight guns of roughly 356 mm in twin turrets. Hiei was committed to operations in the Pacific and in November 1942 she was heavily damaged in a night action off Guadalcanal and lost the following day; she was the first Japanese battleship lost in that war.

Building and painting tips

Finish and spray the hull and the decks first, and only then fit the superstructures and the small armament. The wooden deck areas come to life if, over the base shade, you go lightly over them with a weak wash that runs into the engraved seams. The tall pagoda superstructure is characteristic of this class, so pay attention to getting it vertical, because a leaning superstructure shows on a finished model at first glance. Railings and walkways are worth replacing with photo-etched parts, and the mast rigging can be suggested with fine fishing line. For the effect of a ship under way it pays to set the model into a water surface made of modeling resin or acrylic gel.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Japanese warships in 1:700 scale
  • Anyone interested in the fighting in the Pacific and in the Kongo class
  • Modelers who want to complete the model with photo-etched parts and a water diorama
  • Builders of display groups in a single scale

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Both ships belonged to the same class, but they differed in their fate and in details of the superstructures. Between the wars Hiei was disarmed as a training ship, and her later reconstruction served as the pattern for the pagoda superstructure of further Japanese battleships.

The hull ends at the level of the water and has no lower part with the keel. The model is therefore built on a flat base or into a diorama with a sea, which saves room in the display case and simplifies the build.

Yes, as long as they take care with the small armament parts and do not rush the painting of the deck. We recommend starting without photo-etched accessories and adding them on the next model.

The contents differ between individual releases and are not stated here. Water bases, stands and photo-etched railings are commonly bought separately.
