About product

Japanese heavy cruiser Suzuya 1:700: Tamiya, Waterline Series

This injection-molded plastic kit represents the Imperial Japanese Navy heavy cruiser Suzuya, the third unit of the Mogami class, in 1:700 scale. The model belongs to the Waterline Series: it is built without the lower part of the hull, so the finished ship looks as though it were afloat. Collectors like this approach, because it lets a whole fleet be built in one scale and at one height, and it also works beautifully in a diorama with a water surface. The box holds parts for the hull, the decks, the intricate superstructure, the gun turrets, the torpedo tube mounts, the masts, the crane and the catapults, plus decals and assembly instructions.

The real subject

Suzuya belonged to the Mogami class, four large cruisers that Japan built at the limit of the treaty restrictions of the day. The ships were originally completed with triple 155 mm turrets, and in the prewar years the Imperial Japanese Navy rearmed them with twin 203 mm turrets, which turned them into full-fledged heavy cruisers. Suzuya operated in the Pacific from the start of the war, escorted the fast carrier groups and took part in a series of operations in the southwest Pacific. She was lost in the fall of 1944 during the fighting off the Philippines, where American carrier aircraft put her out of action.

Building and painting tips

Work from the hull and the decks toward the superstructures. Leave the small parts on the sprue and cut them off only just before gluing, as they are easier to handle that way. Glue with thin cement for plastic applied with a needle. Painting is quickest with an airbrush: the gray shade of the hull and superstructures, a different tone for the wooden decks, then a gloss clear coat under the decals and a flat coat at the end. A fine dark wash and dry-brushing bring out the divisions of the superstructures. Railings, ladders and antennas from photo-etched accessories lift the model considerably, but they are not in the box.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of the Japanese war fleet in 1:700 scale
  • Anyone interested in the fighting in the Pacific and in the Mogami class
  • Modelers with experience of small parts
  • Builders of dioramas and display groups of ships

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

She was the third unit of the Mogami class and differed from the first two ships in details of the superstructures and in changes made during construction. The model is therefore not interchangeable with the other sister ships.

You do not, the model can be built straight from the box. Photo-etched railings, ladders and antennas improve the final impression considerably, however, and many modelers add them.

Yes, that is the whole point of the range. All the models are in 1:700 scale and end at the waterline, so they form a consistent group on a shared base.

They are not. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted, and paints, glue and accessories are bought separately.
