About product

Wooden deck 1:700 for the battleship Fuso 1944

The set from Artwox Model is not a kit of the ship but an accessory for a modeler who has already got himself a kit of the battleship Fuso in 1:700 scale. The contents are a thin wooden veneer cut to the shape of the deck areas, with the laying of the planks printed on it and with a self-adhesive layer on the back. At such a reduction a plank cannot be engraved or painted credibly, whereas real veneer has a grain of its own and light reflects off it as it should. The accessory is intended for the Fujimi 401188 kit.

The real subject

The Fuso was a battleship of the Imperial Japanese Navy with a characteristic tall superstructure, which came about by the gradual piling up of command and rangefinding positions. The state of 1944 matches the late form of the ship after the modifications of the anti-aircraft armament and the superstructures. For a modeler it is essential that the deck arrangement of the late version differs from the early states, and the deck is therefore cut precisely for this configuration.

Gluing and painting tips

Most mistakes arise during the laying itself. Lay the veneer on dry, find the center and remember two reference points, for example the foot of the superstructure and the edge of the side. Take the film off only halfway, fix the veneer in the center and from there work toward the edges. Force the air out with a flat finger or a smoother, never with a fingernail. Around the barbettes and the bases of the superstructures rather leave the veneer overhanging by a hair and trim the overhang only once it has dried. The shade can be evened out gently with a very thinned stain, and the gaps are brought out by a dark wash drawn along the grain. Matte varnish at the end.

Who the set is for

  • For builders of the battleship Fuso in her late state in 1:700 scale
  • For modelers who want a faithful structure of wood instead of engraving in plastic
  • For competition and display case models
  • For those looking for a quick improvement without working with metal

This is an accessory to a plastic kit, not a model of the ship. The kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. This is a wooden deck, that is an accessory to a plastic kit of a battleship in 1:700 scale.

It designates the state of the real subject the deck is cut for. The deck arrangement of the late versions differs from the early ones.

Take the backing film off in sections, fix the veneer in the center first and force the air out toward the edges with flat pressure, not with a fingernail.

Yes, it takes a thinned stain and a wash. Heavy coats will cover the pattern of the wood, though, so work in thin passes.

It is intended for the Fujimi 401188 kit.
