A plastic kit of the Japanese aircraft carrier Katsuragi from the Japanese manufacturer Fujimi. The model is treated as full hull, that is, with the whole hull from the keel to the flight deck, so it is displayed on a base and also shows the shape of the underwater part. The 1:700 scale is the most widespread for ship models and makes it possible to build a comparable collection even in an ordinary display case.
The Katsuragi was one of the aircraft carriers of the Unryu class, a series derived from the design of the ship Hiryu and built as a replacement for the losses of 1942. She was taken into service in the autumn of 1944 at Kure. Because of a shortage of large marine turbines she received machinery derived from destroyers, which told on her attainable speed. She never saw use with an air group. Damaged, she came through the American raids on Kure in the summer of 1945 and after the surrender served on repatriation voyages, on which she carried Japanese soldiers and civilians home from overseas. She was scrapped in the postwar years.
The basis is a flat and untwisted flight deck, so glue it and weight it on a flat support and keep checking that it seats along its whole length. The island, the funnel and the booms of the anti-aircraft positions are small and are easier to work with once the main surfaces have been painted. The wooden part of the deck looks better when you shade it in several tones and bring the lines of the planks out with a thin wash. Spray the underwater part separately and mask the transition at the waterline with tape.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
