About product

Light cruiser HMS Ajax 1939 in 1:700 scale (Flyhawk)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the British light cruiser HMS Ajax in the state matching 1939, in the 1:700 ship scale. This is the basic release; an extended Deluxe Edition of the same ship also exists. The particular contents of the package, the number of parts and the presence of photo-etched additions are given in the instructions supplied with the kit. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The real subject

HMS Ajax was a British light cruiser of the Leander class of the first half of the 1930s. Ships of this class had a main armament of 152 mm guns in twin turrets, a single funnel and a layout optimized for long patrol cruises overseas. Ajax belonged to the group of cruisers operating in the South Atlantic at the end of 1939 and is most often associated with exactly that period of her service.

Building and painting tips

Ship models in 1:700 stand on patient work with small parts. Decide first whether you are building the model with the full hull or in the waterline version, that is with the hull cut off at the waterline; follow the instructions. Paint the hull and the decks before you fit the superstructures, masts and boats. Leave the gun turrets and the launches loose and glue them on only after the main coat. Lay the paint on with an airbrush in thin coats, so that the fine relief of the decks does not disappear. Railings and other photo-etched additions are glued with cyanoacrylate applied with a stick or a wire, never straight from the bottle. The model shows well on a simple stand or on a board imitating the surface of the water.

Who the model is for

  • For ship modelers who get on with the collector's scale of 1:700.
  • For anyone interested in the Royal Navy of the late 1930s.
  • For builders who like working with fine detail and photo-etch.
  • For display cases with no room for large ship models.

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

This is the basic release of the same ship. The Deluxe Edition is an extended version of the same ship, and the particular difference in the contents of the package is given in the description on the box.

With ships in 1:700 scale a choice between the full hull and waterline is usual. The instructions supplied in the box decide.

Whether the box holds photo-etch will be shown by the parts list in the instructions. Photo-etched sets and wooden decks are usually sold separately for ship models.

1:700 scale means very small parts. A patient beginner will manage it, but it is more comfortable for a modeler who has built one ship already.
