A deck veneer for the plastic model of the heavy cruiser USS Des Moines in 1:700 scale. It is laid onto the deck of the model and replaces the smooth plastic surface with real wood with the grain of planks. The difference shows as soon as it is fitted: the planks have a texture and a shade of their own, which is hard to imitate by painting plastic.
The USS Des Moines was the first completed heavy cruiser of the class of the same name. She entered service in 1948 and belonged to the last big gun cruisers of the US Navy. The main armament consisted of automatic 203 mm guns, which markedly speeded the rate of fire up compared with older cruisers. She spent most of her active service in the Mediterranean as a flagship and she was decommissioned in 1961.
For ship modelers in 1:700 scale who want a deck that stands up to a close look and to a photograph. Working with the veneer is careful rather than complicated and even a less experienced builder will manage it, as long as the dry fitting is done properly.
It is an accessory to a model. The ship kit itself, paints and glue are not included, unless stated otherwise.
