An injection-molded plastic kit of the American large cruiser USS Hawaii (CB-3) in 1:700 scale from the Chinese manufacturer Trumpeter. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Trumpeter also makes both sister ships of the class in the same scale, so the whole trio can be built side by side.
Hawaii was the third ship of the Alaska class, which the US Navy placed in its own category of large cruisers with the designation CB: ships of greater displacement than heavy cruisers, but without the armor protection of battleships. The main armament was to consist of three triple turrets with 305 mm guns, backed by dual-purpose guns of smaller caliber. Unlike the first two ships, Hawaii was never completed: work was stopped after the Second World War with the hull still on the slip, later conversion proposals stayed on paper and the ship ended up as scrap. The model therefore captures the form the vessel was meant to have on the drawings, not a state in service.
In 1:700 scale everything hangs on clean hull seams and a level deck: test fit the parts dry before gluing, then fill and sand the seam before you fit the small equipment. Leave the superstructures and the guns aside until the last moment so that they do not break during handling. It pays to set the decks off in color from the sides of the hull and to lift them with a very thin, well-diluted wash; a heavy wash would blur the detail together at this scale. Railings and other photo-etched parts are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise, but they are exactly what lifts the finished model most. Finally set the model on a stand or into a base with a water surface.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
