About product

Blue wooden deck 1:700 for the USS Pittsburgh CA-72 from Artwox Model

This set is not a model but an accessory to a plastic kit in 1:700 scale. It differs from the ordinary veneer deck in color: the wood is in a dark blue finish, as the name gives. The American warships of the Second World War often had their deck planks painted over with a dark deck coating, so a light veneer looks out of place on them and the dark variant suits better. The laying of the planks stays marked and the back is self-adhesive. The deck is cut for the Trumpeter 05726 kit.

The real subject

The USS Pittsburgh was a heavy cruiser of the Baltimore class, taken into service in 1944. She carried nine 203 mm guns in three triple turrets, a strong dual-purpose battery of 127 mm guns and extensive light anti-aircraft armament. The ships of this class had a considerably greater displacement and better armor protection than the older American cruisers. Pittsburgh is best known for losing her bow section in a typhoon in June 1945 and still reaching repair under her own power.

Gluing and painting tips

Dark veneer makes different demands from light. Do not adjust the shade with filters any more, or you will drown the color; instead work with a very discreet dry brush in a lighter tone on the edges and in the places of service wear. What matters is matching the deck to the spraying of the hull and the superstructures, so that the model does not read as two different ships; so test the color of the hull beside a sample of the veneer before you spray it. The plastic under the veneer must be flat and degreased, otherwise a dark surface will show every unevenness once it dries.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want a deck in a dark finish instead of light wood
  • Builders of American heavy cruisers in 1:700 scale
  • Those building the ship in her late wartime appearance
  • Modelers who do not want to create a dark deck shade by spraying

This is an accessory to a plastic kit. The kit itself, paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

American ships often had their deck planks painted over with a dark coating. A dark veneer therefore matches the wartime appearance better than light wood.

Filters and washes will rather kill the dark tone. A discreet dry brush in a lighter shade on the edges works better.

According to the name it is a wooden deck. Any further contents of the package are given by the manufacturer on the box.
