An injection molded plastic kit from the Chinese maker Takom in 1:72 scale. The subject of the model is one of the main gun turrets of the German battleship Scharnhorst, specifically the turret designated B, fitted with 28 cm guns of the SK C/34 type. It is therefore not a model of the ship but a section of its armament, which in this scale comes out as a large and impressive piece for a display case. The kit is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
The Scharnhorst was a German battleship of the end of the 1930s whose main armament consisted of triple turrets with 28 cm guns. The turrets were technical units in their own right with their own ammunition supply routes, traverse drives, sighting equipment and a crew inside the barbette. A model of a turret thus makes it possible to show details that on a model of a whole ship in an ordinary scale practically disappear: the shape of the shield, the arrangement of the barrels, the mounting in the barbette and the fittings of the visible part.
Before gluing the large flat parts of the shield together, the contact faces have to be leveled carefully so that no unwanted gap appears anywhere; large flat faces give away every inaccuracy. Seat the barrels to the templates only once the surrounding parts have dried, as otherwise their alignment will drift. Mix the gray naval paint matte and brighten the middle of the faces, so that the model does not look flat. Keep the lift of the panels and rivets heavily thinned, as contrasting drawing does not suit naval vehicles. Rust streaks under the drains and wear in the places where the crew walked will give the turret both scale and a story. Given the dimensions, it pays to set the model on a base or in a display case with a label.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
