Tracks for the A34 Comet, 1:72 scale

The set contains replacement tracks for a model of the British Comet cruiser tank in 1:72 scale. It is not a kit of the tank but an accessory for modelers who want to replace the tracks from the box with a more accurate part. In a small scale swapping the tracks has a surprisingly large effect: a track frames the whole silhouette of a model and a simplified molding is immediately apparent on it.

The real subject

The Comet, carried in the British army under the designation A34, was a cruiser tank of the last phase of the Second World War. It grew out of the preceding design in the cruiser tank family and brought both heavier armament and a better-shaped turret. The running gear with its large road wheels and return rollers gives the vehicle its characteristically low and long silhouette. The Comet remained in service long after the war as well and was used by a number of other armies.

Use and tips

• Check that the pitch and the width of the track match the running gear of your kit
• Assemble and clean up the wheels and the return rollers before you fit the track
• In 1:72 scale work with tweezers and good light, as the parts are tiny
• Paint the tracks separately and fit them after the base coat on the hull
• Pick out the sag between the rollers sparingly, as exaggerated sag looks unnatural on a small model

Who the set is for

It will be appreciated by modelers who build the Comet in 1:72 scale and want tracks with crisper relief than the kit offers. It also suits where the tracks in the box are made of a material that is hard to paint or glue. Given the size of the parts it is an accessory rather for more experienced builders.
