About product

A-4B Skyhawk refueling probe boom, 1:72 (MASTER)

This item is not a kit - it is a detail accessory for a model you already have. MASTER specializes in turned brass and aluminum parts; this set contains a turned metal refueling probe boom (aluminum according to the manufacturer) completed by 3D-printed parts for mounting. It replaces the plastic part from the kit following the enclosed instructions.

The A-4 Skyhawk was refueled in flight through a fixed probe running along the starboard side of the nose, which the pilot inserted into the basket trailed by a tanker aircraft. The form of the probe differed between versions, straight as well as bent, which is why the manufacturer makes separate parts for the individual versions. This part is meant for the A-4B, so it is a different version and a different scale from the parts made for the other variants. Check which version you are building.

Why metal instead of plastic

The refueling probe is the most exposed protruding part of the whole model and the one that breaks off most often in handling. A turned metal boom is genuinely thin, has a real open tip and, above all, will not bend or snap the way thin resin or overstretched plastic does. In the small 1:72 scale metal also holds a crisp shape that a plastic mold cannot reach.

Usage and painting tips

Metal cannot be glued with polystyrene cement - use cyanoacrylate glue (super glue) or epoxy. Before painting, degrease the metal part with alcohol or isopropyl alcohol and apply a primer, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth metal and will start to flake. Fit the probe right at the end of the build. The A-4 Skyhawk was an American light carrier-borne attack aircraft famous for its small size and simplicity - it did not even need a folding wing, because it fitted whole into the shipboard elevator.

Who the part is for

  • Builders of the A-4B Skyhawk in 1:72 scale
  • Modelers whose thin plastic probe on the nose keeps breaking
  • Those who want a crisp, thin and durable metal detail
  • More experienced modelers, since it means working with metal, primer and cyanoacrylate glue

This is a detail accessory for modelers, not a kit. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. It is a replacement detail part - a turned metal refueling probe boom. The A-4B Skyhawk model has to be obtained separately.

It is better not to. The form of the refueling probe differed between versions and the manufacturer makes separate parts for each one. This one is meant for the A-4B in 1:72 scale.

Polystyrene cement does not hold on metal - use cyanoacrylate glue or epoxy. Degrease the part before painting and apply a primer, otherwise the paint will come off the smooth metal.

It allows fuel to be taken on in flight. The pilot flies the fixed probe into the basket trailed by a tanker aircraft and the fuel is transferred without landing.
