This item is not an aircraft kit but a full photo-etched set from the Czech maker Eduard aimed at the outside of the model. Exterior sets deal with the elements that injection-molded plastic cannot manage in principle: very thin sheets, see-through gratings, fine stiffeners and small surface details that in a mold would have to be either too thick or merely suggested by engraving. Etched metal has a real thickness of hundredths of a millimeter, so a grating can be made genuinely open and an edge genuinely sharp.
On a large four-engine aircraft in 1:72 scale that has a noticeable effect. The model has a large area of fuselage and wing, and simplified details show across that whole area rather than in one place only. At the same time this is a type with unusually rich external equipment, so there is plenty to improve.
The AC-130J is the gunship version of the four-engine turboprop transport of the Hercules line, built on its modern generation. Outwardly it differs from the transport version above all in its built-in armament and in extensive targeting and surveillance equipment, because of which it carries a run of fairings, sensors and bulges on the fuselage that an ordinary transport machine does not have. It is exactly these additions that give the type its characteristic silhouette.
Exterior photo-etch is glued onto a surface that will then be painted and clear coated, so plan the sequence in advance. Sand the original engraved detail smooth where the part goes, otherwise it will not seat. Glue with super glue in minute drops, and for larger parts a gel variant helps. Degrease the metal and go over it with a primer for metals together with the surrounding plastic, so that the paint holds equally on both materials. Do not flood the open gratings with clear coat, or you lose the very thing you bought the set for.
