A set of cut masks for a model of the Aérospatiale Alouette III helicopter in 1:72 scale. The masks cover the glazed areas before spraying, so that once they are peeled off the cabin frames are left crisply separated from the transparent panels. On the Alouette III that matters more than on other types: the cabin is formed by a large glass bubble with a dense network of frames, which is slow to mask by hand with tape and where an uneven edge is easily produced. The set is cut for the particular kit given on the box, so check before buying that it matches the model you are building; masks from another kit need not fit it.
The Alouette III is a French light multipurpose helicopter with a turboshaft engine that followed on from the successful Alouette II and first flew at the end of the 1950s. It carried a pilot and several other people, had excellent performance at high altitudes and, thanks to its simple maintenance, spread to dozens of countries. It was used for rescue and mountain operations, for observation, liaison, training and for police duties, and it was also built under license outside France. The extensive cabin glazing is its most characteristic feature and at the same time the main modeling challenge.
First wash the clear parts and let them dry thoroughly, so that the mask holds over the whole area. Lift the mask off its backing with pointed tweezers or the edge of a scalpel, lay it down and press it with a soft stick; it is pressure around the perimeter that decides how clean the edge is. Spray the paint in thin coats; a heavy coat runs underneath more easily than several light passes. It pays to spray the interior shade of the frames first and only then the exterior color. Remove the masks while the finish is fresh, not after it has cured fully.
This is a masking set, not a model of a helicopter. The kit and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
