About product

Australian Camel Corps Dismounted 1:72 (Strelets-R)

A figure set in 1:72 scale from the manufacturer Strelets-R. These are soldiers of a camel corps in foot, dismounted form, that is, without the riding animals. The figures are cast from soft plastic, supplied unpainted and unassembled and intended for completing dioramas and scenes in the usual small military scale. The number of pieces and the make-up of the poses are stated on the packaging.

The real subject

Camel units found use during the First World War in Egypt, in Sinai and in Palestine, that is, in terrain where horse and wheeled units ran up against a shortage of water and against soft sand. The camel served mainly as a means of transport to the place of the fighting; the fighting itself was conducted by the crew on foot, which is exactly the situation this set captures. Australian and New Zealand companies made up a prominent part of the strength of these formations. The equipment proceeded from British practice, and the uniforms were light and adapted to a hot and dusty environment.

Building and painting tips

The soft plastic of Strelets-R is flexible and holds ordinary acrylic paint less well. First wash the figures in lukewarm water with detergent, carefully deburr the parting seams with a sharp scalpel or a sanding sponge and only then apply a thin layer of primer. Without primer the paint cracks and flakes off when a figure is bent. Use a light khaki tone for the base, handle the shadows with a dark wash into the folds and accent the raised edges with a dry brush. A dusty touch is given by a fine pigment on the boots and the lower part of the trouser legs. For a firm join of the parts and for gluing to a base reach for cyanoacrylate, as ordinary plastic cement does not hold on this material.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of dioramas from the campaign in the Middle East in the years 1914 to 1918
  • Modelers who are adding foot characters to 1:72 scale
  • Collectors of historical figure lines
  • Wargamers playing in a small scale

The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. The set is supplied as unpainted castings of soft plastic. Neither paints nor glue are included in the package.

The material is flexible and smooth. Without a base layer the paint cracks and flakes off when a figure is bent; with primer it holds substantially better.

The designation Dismounted means soldiers on foot, without riding animals. The exact make-up of the package is stated on the box.

Yes, 1:72 scale is common for aircraft as well as hardware, so the figures can be used as an addition to a scene with other models of the same scale.
