Cut masks for building the EMB-312 Tucano trainer in 1:48 scale. It is not an airplane model but an accessory for a plastic kit. The masks are stuck onto the areas that are meant to come out of spraying clean and are taken off once the paint has dried. The shapes are cut in advance to the parts of the model, so the most laborious part of the preparation falls away, namely piecing a mask together from strips of tape and trimming it with a scalpel on the canopy itself.
The EMB-312 Tucano is a single-engine turboprop trainer with a two-seat tandem cockpit and retractable landing gear. For a modeler it is that glazing which is the defining feature: the canopy is long, tall and divided into several sections so that both crew members have a good view. The glazed areas therefore take up a disproportionately large part of the upper side of the fuselage and have far more frames than on an ordinary single-seat fighter.
The Tucano is a textbook example of when a cut mask pays off most. Masking that many small frames by hand takes hours, and one line run inaccurately is enough to make the framing look irregular. Lay the individual pieces down one after another, not all at once: settle each one dry, line it up with the engraved frame, press it with a blunt stick all the way round, and only then move on to the next. Before the target shade comes, seal the edge with a thin coat of base or clear paint. Lay the paint on with an airbrush in thin coats. Trainers tend to wear strong contrasting schemes, so the transitions are judged close up and a heavy coat on the edge makes a visible step. Take the mask off shortly after spraying, while the paint is dry only to the touch.
