About product

Avia S-199 (ERLA canopy) 1:72 (Eduard)

An injection-molded plastic kit of the Czechoslovak postwar Avia S-199 fighter in 1:72 scale from Eduard, in the version with the rounded bulged ERLA type cockpit canopy. Depending on the edition, the package holds plastic parts, a clear canopy and decals for several marking variants; according to the level of the edition, photo-etched parts and masking films may be enclosed as well. This version differs from the variant with the original framed Avia canopy precisely in the shape of the cockpit canopy.

The real subject

The Avia S-199, nicknamed Mezek (the Mule), came about in postwar Czechoslovakia from the airframe of the Messerschmitt Bf 109G, into which, for want of the original engines, a Junkers Jumo 211 bomber engine with a massive propeller was fitted. That gave the aircraft a character of its own in the air. Some of the machines carried the rounded bulged ERLA type cockpit canopy known from late Bf 109G aircraft. The S-199 became famous as the very first fighter aircraft of the Israeli Air Force in 1948, and it served with the Czechoslovak Air Force as well.

Building and painting tips

Use liquid cement for plastic, and glue any photo-etched parts with super glue. Finish and paint the cockpit before you close the fuselage up. Lay a primer down before varnishing and apply the paints with an airbrush; the masks enclosed (where the edition includes them) make clean glazing of the cockpit easier. Pay attention to the correct shape of the rounded ERLA canopy and to the massive propeller, which are what characterize this version.

Who the model is for

  • Collectors of Czechoslovak and Israeli aviation history in 1:72 scale
  • Fans of Bf 109 derivatives and of unusual postwar machines
  • Modelers who want the version with the rounded ERLA canopy
  • Anyone after a quality injection-molded kit from Eduard

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

This version has the rounded bulged ERLA type cockpit canopy known from late Bf 109G aircraft. It thus differs from the variant with the original framed Avia canopy.

It is a Czechoslovak postwar fighter built from the airframe of the Bf 109G with a Junkers Jumo 211 bomber engine. Its unusual character in the air earned it the nickname Mezek, the Mule, and the machine became famous as the first fighter of the Israeli Air Force in 1948.

It depends on the level of the edition. The better equipped editions add photo-etched parts and masking films to the plastic; you will find the particular contents in the instructions in the package.
