Two Lancasters from the last year of the war: the British machine LM130 with the code JO-N of No. 463 Squadron from Waddington and the Canadian-built KB772 with the code VR-R of No. 419 Squadron from Middleton St George.
Responsibility details are not available.
The year 1945 found the Lancasters in two rather different guises and the sheet captures both. The British-built machine LM130 carried the code marking JO-N and on the nose a jaunty painting with an inscription promising that it would settle matters with the enemy. It served with No. 463 Squadron from Waddington in Lincolnshire, one of the heavy bomber units that in the closing stage of the war also took part in food drops over a starving Netherlands.
The second variant belongs to the machine KB772 with the code VR-R and the nickname Ropey of No. 419 Squadron, stationed in April 1945 at the Middleton St George base. The designation B Mk.X gives away its origin: these Lancasters were built in Canada, had American Packard engines and a number of small departures from British production, from the shape of the cover over the forward gun turret to the equipment of the cockpit. The Canadian group to which No. 419 Squadron belonged formed a separate body within Bomber Command, and its machines differed from their British siblings in details so much that builders have to decide right at the start.
For a model that means one thing only: choose the right type of kit before you reach for this sheet. The motifs are printed on a common carrier film, cut out one by one and transferred with water. The large code letters on the sides of the fuselage are best seated all at once and then evened out carefully, so that the spacing between them stays the same as on the original. In this scale the fuselage of the Lancaster is flat and smooth, so the printing will seat without difficulty even without the use of a softening solution.
