A decal sheet in 1:72 scale from the British manufacturer Xtradecal, devoted to the AEW.2 version of the Avro Shackleton. The decals are waterslide and serve to mark a model already built: there are no construction parts in the package. Which machines the sheet covers and to what extent is given by the manufacturer on the packaging and the instructions inside; compare them before buying with the model you want to finish.
The Avro Shackleton was a British four-engined aircraft with piston engines, derived in design from the same maker's post-war bombers and used chiefly for long patrol flights over the sea. The AEW.2 version came about by converting older airframes into airborne early warning aircraft, when a large radar with a characteristic radome under the forward fuselage was added. In this form the machines stayed in service considerably longer than had originally been expected and became the last variant of the type in British use.
The Shackleton has a broken surface with pronounced panel joints, transitions on the engine nacelles and the surrounds of the radome. It is exactly here that a decal softener comes in useful. Place the decal on a dampened area, fine-tune the position and only then lay the softener on it with a soft brush. The film softens and clings to the irregularities, and in doing so it sometimes wrinkles briefly: that is a normal phenomenon, so do not touch it until it dries and do not try to smooth it out. With deeper engraved lines it helps, once dry, to prick the film lightly with the point of a scalpel and repeat the softener.
A decal sheet is not a kit. The model, paints, varnish and glue are not included in the package.
